Smart Match Network · Fee-Share Recruitment
Whatever stage you're at — pass on a case, build your own practice, or move to a salaried role — there's a straightforward path. Pick the one that fits.
Path One — Refer
You'd be referring the matter to an international law firm — 360+ partners, more than 25 jurisdictions. Refer it through Smart Match Network and earn a fee share on the outcome.
The referral fee arrangement sits directly between your firm and theirs. Smart Match Network makes the introduction — we're the facilitator, not a party to that agreement.
Reasons solicitors refer a matter on
No membership fee, no cost to refer — straightforward incremental income on work you'd otherwise pass on for nothing.
Earn a fee share on referred work — or direct it to the firm's charitable foundation, supporting causes on the ground where its partners practise.
Once referred, you're connected directly with a specialist lawyer at the firm — typically within 24 hours — with a range of price points to suit your client's budget.
The client stays yours. Introducer details are recorded at onboarding and protected by a non-solicitation commitment — if they ever approach the firm directly, your consent is required before anything proceeds.
"If I pass a matter on, my client relationship is protected — and I still get paid for the introduction. It costs me nothing to try."

Path Two — Join
We're specifically looking for lawyers with around 7–10 years' PQE and an existing client following — established enough to bring a portable book, entrepreneurial enough to want to build something of your own. The firm is an international law practice with 360+ partners across more than 25 jurisdictions, built on a model that puts its lawyers first: flexibility, outstanding calibre, a collaborative culture, and a truly international outlook — without the constraints of a traditional partnership structure.
Work from wherever suits you — your home, any of the firm's offices worldwide, or with clients. You set the terms.
Join a community of outstandingly able lawyers, all chosen for technical excellence, business acumen and a collaborative approach.
Freedom to build your own legal and administrative team as a Business Unit — making your practice genuinely scalable.
Access junior lawyers, trainees and paralegals across international practices for cost-effective support on matters.
Our firm partners have strong cultures of collaboration, community and social responsibility — Partners are actively involved beyond their practices.
Lawyers who wish to practice across more than one jurisdiction are actively accommodated — with genuine cross-border infrastructure.
"The firm is refreshingly different from traditional large firms. Partners are empowered in an ethos of collaboration and entrepreneurship to develop their practice as they see fit."
Senior Partner — UK Practice"The firm has given me the freedom to engage with clients in the way that I, as a career in-house lawyer, think is right. We have the rigour of a major firm but without the rigid structures."
Philip Solomons — Partner, Corporate & Commercial, England & Wales"For any lawyer looking to expand their practice internationally, the firm provides a unique platform to deliver premier legal services that reflect a global mindset."
Founding Partner — International PracticeRemuneration
Partners at the firm typically earn far more than they would at a comparable traditional firm. Remuneration comes from three sources — personal billings, referrals, and delegation — creating a genuinely compounding income model.
Rates operate on a sliding scale: 70% up to £300k billed, 75% to £500k, and 80% above that. The more you build, the more you retain.
Introduce a client to any colleague at the firm and earn 15% of all relevant fees for as long as that client remains with the firm. Over time, referral income can represent a substantial part of your practice.
Build your own team of lawyers and support staff. All output is treated as a single profit centre, enabling you to scale your practice well beyond your personal capacity. Some Partners have built practices in excess of £1m per annum.
Billing bands: 70% up to £300k · 75% to £500k · 80% above £500k. Partners are paid monthly based on fees collected. Real-time billing dashboard accessible via firm intranet.
The Process
The firm prides itself on being highly responsive. In urgent cases, it has onboarded new Partners within two working days.
An initial call with Nick Starbuck at Smart Match Network. Entirely confidential, no obligation. We explore your practice area, billing profile, and ambitions.
From here, you're speaking with the firm directly, not with Smart Match Network. A direct introduction to a member of the firm's senior management team. First meeting focuses on practice fit and the consultancy structure.
A further conversation with a senior colleague from your practice area. References taken. A business plan is welcome but not essential at this stage.
The firm makes a formal offer and issues a Partners' agreement. Full infrastructure support from day one — your practice, your way.
Who This Is For
The firm looks for established practitioners who combine proven technical expertise with a commercial, entrepreneurial mindset. This is not a role for every lawyer — and that selectivity is what makes the community valuable.
"The firm truly allows practitioners to adopt a patient capital approach to market development — something that traditional firms will find increasingly difficult if not impossible to achieve."
Zac Lucas — Partner, Private Client & Private Wealth, Singapore"The big change from moving to the firm is that I have access to colleagues specialising in other areas of law — a better service to clients as the firm is a full service firm. The vibe is relaxed and our team is friendly."

Infrastructure
The firm provides all essential infrastructure as standard, so you can focus entirely on building your practice and serving clients. There are no hidden charges or overhead surprises.
Growing Your Practice
Beyond infrastructure, the firm actively supports Partners in developing their practices through structured business development support and a genuine culture of collaboration.
The firm works with each Partner to develop a personalised business plan and connects them with colleagues in complementary areas — including international offices.
Monthly meetings across service lines and sectors, providing structured opportunities to share expertise, develop referrals, and raise your profile within the firm.
Expert guidance on Chambers and Legal 500 submissions, social media presence development, and identifying you as a leader in your field.
Path Three — Recruitment
Fee-share and self-employed consultancy isn't the right fit for everyone, and that's a completely separate question from anything above. Smart Match Network also runs a standard, retained recruitment service for solicitors looking for the security and structure of a traditional employed position — at any firm, not just the fee-share partner featured on this site.
Salaried positions across a range of firms — for solicitors who want stability and a structured career path, not a fee-share arrangement.
A more traditional, thorough recruitment process — properly briefed, well-matched introductions rather than a high-volume approach.
As with every service on this site, there's never a fee to you. Smart Match Network is paid by the hiring firm.

Your Point of Contact
Nick Starbuck is the founder of Smart Match Network — specialist recruitment for entrepreneurial lawyers. Smart Match works with a small number of leading fee-share law firms to introduce the right lawyers at the right time. All introductions are handled exclusively through Smart Match Network, ensuring candidates receive proper preparation, context, and advocacy before any formal approach is made.
Nick has a specialist background in franchise and consultancy recruitment — having previously recruited for Business for Breakfast and Robocore Recruitment, both network and franchise-based models. Whatever stage you're at — passing on a case, building your own practice, or looking for a salaried move — that's a decision worth making with proper context, and Nick's role is to make sure you have it.
All conversations are handled with complete confidentiality. Nick's role is to introduce and facilitate — once that introduction is made, you'll be speaking directly with the firm, not with Smart Match Network. The resulting referral fee, consultancy, or employment agreement is made directly between you and the firm; Smart Match Network is not a party to that agreement. Our job is to ensure the right lawyers reach the firm, and that the firm gets the right information about each candidate, making the process smooth and well-positioned from both sides.
